Paddy Power to Pay Out on Celtic winning Next Year's League Title

2017-07-19 10:17:58

Early Pay-out

Paddy Power are no strangers to outrageous publicity stunts, only last month they erected a 140ft statue of Theresa May in Dover, and their latest nutty idea is up there with their best. Although the new Scottish football season won’t kick off until August 5th Paddy Power have already promised to pay up on all bets placed on Celtic to win the title. The announcement came after Celtic’s bitter Glasgow rivals Rangers were dumped out of the Europa League at the first hurdle. After the game, Paddy Power tweeted: “Sod it – we’re paying out on Celtic winning next season’s Scottish Premiership title #YouBeauty”.

Paddy Power are clearly very confident that Celtic will win their 3rd straight title and weren’t going to miss out on the chance to stir up the rivalry between Scotland’s two biggest clubs! This isn’t the first time that the mischievous Irish company has paid out early on a seemingly sure bet. Only last year they paid out $1.1m to those who backed Hillary Clinton to win the US Presidential Election. They’ll be hoping that unlike Hillary, Celtic will come out on top!

Early Exit

Rangers were humiliated against Luxembourg minnows Progres Niederkorn in Differdange losing 2-0 on the night and their First Qualifying Round tie 2-1 on aggregate. The Glasgow team were heavy favourites to win the game at ¼ with Progres not being given much chance at 17/2. However, Progres defied all the odds as second half goals from Francoise and Thill sealed a win for Thomas Gilgemann’s side and ensured their passage to the next round. It was Progres’ first win in European football at the 14th attempt. The loss has been described as the worst in Rangers history and has placed the future of manager Pedro Caixinha in doubt after only 4 months in the job.

Bitter Rivalry

The rivalry between Celtic and Rangers goes all the way back to 1888 when the first ‘Old Firm’ derby was held. The two Glasgow clubs are the only teams to have won the Scottish Premier League title and are amongst the favourites to win it again next season. Celtic are odds-on favourites to lift the trophy next May after last years’ record-breaking treble-winning season in which they were unbeaten in all domestic competitions. Paddy Power has the Brendan Rodger’s ‘Hoops’ currently priced at 1/10. Rangers are third favourites to win the league priced at 12/1 just behind Aberdeen at 10/1. This latest in a long line of Paddy Power stunts may not win the company many fans in the blue half of Glasgow but has but has reaffirmed the company’s status as online gaming’s biggest jokers!
