Paddy Power could be paying out big for McGregor

The fight this coming weekend between Floyd Mayweather Jr, an undefeated veteran boxer and Conor McGregor, Irish UFC star, has been a buzzing topic for sports fans and the media alike. Another place where the bout has made huge impact is in the bookies shops, most notably in Ireland. And so, the biggest chain of bookmakers in Ireland has received a hell of a lot of custom off the back of it.

While that added custom may seem at first like a great thing the thing one must remember about sports betting is that nothing is a certainty. You see, in Ireland, the homeland of McGregor pretty much every fan is putting some sort of bet down for their man to beat the American legend. So that means that if he does manage to pull out a win then Paddy Power will be bound to their stakes and have to pay out every single one of those fans. And that's a lot of money.

The exact figure is not quite known yet, and won't be until after the payouts happen but if they do then Paddy Power could see themselves paying a huge eight figure sum to punters.

The fight between Floyd 'Money’ Mayweather Jr and ‘Mystic Mac’ is set to take place at the T-Arena in Las Vegas this coming Saturday. And with 80 per cent of all Irish bets placed on a sensational Conor win Paddy Power will no doubt be watching along with white knuckles.

Paddy Power spokesman Feilim Mac An Iomaire told the Irish Sun: “Punters only have eyes for McGregor ahead of this fight, with over 80 per cent of bets currently placed on him to win.With this weight of support it’s very possible we will see our largest sporting liability ever on a single selection. From a high of 8/1, McGregor is now down to 4/1 to win the fight. Other popular selections which have captured the imagination are part of our ‘Gone in 60 Seconds’ offering, where McGregor is 40/1 to get things wrapped up nice and quick. In our Round Betting markets, McGregor in rounds 1-4 is proving popular on the back of his prediction during the build-up press conferences.”

McGregor is reportedly confident for his upcoming fight, backing himself to KO Mayweather inside the very first round, telling pals: “I’ll do him early.”
Later he added: “He is f*****. There’s no other way about it. His little legs, his little core, his little head . . . I’m gonna knock him out inside the first round, mark my words.”

Not all is so golden in the McGregor camp however, retired boxer and former heavyweight world champion Paulie Malignaggi quit McGregor’s training camp after blasting reports he was knocked down in sparring. Malignaggi insisted that the fall was as a result of a pushdown and not a knockdown — and he has now left McGregor’s training camp. Writing on Twitter, the retired Brooklyn boxer said: “I came to help this camp out, not to be exploited, now your gonna get the truth though. Post full unedited video from Tuesday night. It stays in the gym, until the guy you’re boxing with keeps making it public u f***ing mutt, works both ways use some common sense.”
