The Scottish Premier Football League (SPFL) have announced that next season’s Betfred Cup will see the winners net a record prize of £250,000. From next season onwards more than £1.6 million in prize money and a further £500,000 in TV money will be paid out to Scottish clubs. A total of 44 clubs will take part in the competition which starts on Friday, July 14 and continues until late November. The new prize money structure will see the losers of the semi-finals awarded £80,000 while the runners-up will net £250,000. Both clubs taking part in the final will also earn £32,000 each in TV payments. Celtic are the current holders, after beating Aberdeen in last years’ final 3-0 at Hampden Park in November. It was Celtic’s first trophy of their historic treble-winning season in which they remained unbeaten in all domestic competitions.
Last year was the first season that Betfred sponsored the cup, taking over from previous sponsors energy firm Utilita. A change in format of the competition accompanied the change in sponsorship with the introduction of a group stage. It has proved to be hugely successful with renewed interest in Scottish football’s ‘Second Cup’. Announcing the increased prize money SPFL chief executive Neil Doncaster said: “We’re thrilled that it [Betfred Cup] has been further boosted by this significant increase in prize and television money, firmly cementing the Betfred Cup as a key competition in Scottish football”. BT Sport has exclusive rights to the competition and will show 6 group stage matches as well as 7 from the knockout stages including both semi-finals and the final itself. The exposure should see Betfred make a healthy profit on the £1 million deal they made last year to sponsor the Cup for three seasons.
Betfred has grown from a single shop in Salford in 1967 to become the UK’s 4th largest bookmaker employing over 10,000 people across over 1,000 shops and multiple support centres. The company currently holds a license in Gibraltar while its main headquarters is in Warrington in the UK. Betfred is the leading sponsor of a number of UK Racing and Sporting events such as the Cheltenham Gold Cup, Betfred World Snooker Championship, Betfred Super League and Betfred Scottish Cup. Betfred offers a wide range of games including Lottery, Bingo, Poker, Pools, Virtual, Sports Book, Games, Poker and Casino. All the games at Betfred are produced by the excellent Playtech software company.
